LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Across the globe, rising concerns surround e-cigarette use among teenagers, with recent studies revealing significant health threats. A comprehensive review published Thursday by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health analyzed 81 international studies in Archives of Disease in Childhood. The findings confirmed that young individuals who vape are at increased risk of developing serious lung issues and are more likely to become traditional cigarette smokers, often experiencing ongoing coughs, wheezing, chronic bronchitis, and severe asthma.

Study shows young vapers at risk of breathing problems early
Health experts warn young vapers at risk of breathing problems and becoming smokers.

This important review emphasizes the mounting clinical evidence that e-cigarettes act as a direct gateway for adolescents into conventional smoking. Professor Will Carroll, a co-author, remarked that vaping should not be viewed as a harmless phase of youth, citing its clear association with nicotine dependence, compromised lung function, and subsequent cigarette use. Officials have observed a tenfold increase over the past decade in youth experimentation and consistent use of e-cigarettes, with roughly 20% of teenagers aged 11 to 17 in Britain reporting they’ve tried vaping.

In addition to respiratory health concerns, the review identified broader systemic health risks linked to adolescent vaping. Researchers documented evidence connecting vaping to poor oral health—including mouth inflammation, ulcers, and dry mouth—as well as mental health issues such as increased anxiety and depression. Pediatric cardiologists and scientists expressed serious concern over the potential long-term toxic effects of chemical flavorings and heavy metal aerosols on the developing organs of teenagers.

E-Cigarette Use Associated with Ongoing Asthma Flare-Ups and Bronchitis

Responding to these findings, public health advocates urged government action to rapidly implement measures outlined in the Tobacco and Vapes Act. Key policy recommendations include enforcing plain packaging, relocating vaping displays in retail outlets, and banning flavor names that imitate sweets, desserts, or candy. Representatives from Asthma + Lung UK highlighted that the lung health of children is suffering due to aggressive marketing by the industry and called for tighter restrictions on flavor profiles available to youth.

Dr. Mike McKean, Vice-President for Policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, stressed that while long-term data continues to develop, the current clinical evidence warrants immediate policy responses. Public health officials added that although e-cigarettes may have harm-reduction benefits for adult smokers attempting to quit, it is essential to shield non-smokers and minors from exposure to nicotine at the outset.

Analysis of 81 Studies Highlights Risks of E-Cigarette Use Among Adolescents

A representative from the Department of Health and Social Care reaffirmed the government’s goal to foster a smoke-free future by curbing youth vaping through legislative measures. They confirmed that regulations will continue to evolve, guided by scientific research, to combat predatory marketing tactics aimed at children. Public health organizations reiterate the importance of strong legislative safeguards for young vapers at risk of breathing issues and subsequent smoking initiation.

Medical groups continue to advocate for comprehensive restrictions on marketing, flavorings, and retail access. Experts emphasize that preventing initial nicotine addiction among adolescents remains crucial in reducing long-term chronic respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems across the population. The government’s regulatory bodies are expected to review these policy suggestions during upcoming parliamentary sessions.
