THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Significant rainfall and cooler temperatures have led to the relaxation of emergency forestry restrictions across Ontario. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the regional restricted fire zone, along with the backcountry travel ban, was formally ended at 12:01 a.m., marking the conclusion of several weeks during which strict outdoor burning bans were enforced to mitigate wildfire risks in the Northwest Region.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Officials responsible for fire management confirmed that valid burning permits are now in effect again, allowing activities such as outdoor campfires, recreational burns, and fireworks displays, provided safety protocols are observed. In Thunder Bay, municipal authorities also announced that local fire bans would cease at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, while reminding residents that municipal permits are still required for open fires. The lifting of restrictions is attributed to the recent weather pattern, characterized by cooler temperatures and extensive rain, which have substantially reduced the amount of active fuel available for fires.

Alongside the ending of burning prohibitions, emergency management officials also revoked localized access restrictions within Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation areas. Transportation agencies confirmed that major roads, such as Highway 527 and Highway 811, have been fully reopened to the public. This reopening allows residents displaced by recent events to return home and restores routine transportation services and recreational access across key routes in the region.

Ontario Forest Fires tracking systems revealed that the orders for containment around large fire complexes, including Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were lifted at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Previously issued evacuation alerts for the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border have also been rescinded after assessments confirmed that active suppression efforts successfully managed to contain perimeter threats.

Regional restrictions on fire zones lifted Thursday morning

Although regional fire bans are lifted, provincial officials stressed that firefighting crews remain operational on remaining remote fires. Emergency personnel warned that even though immediate safety risks have decreased, individuals should remain cautious when lighting fires in dry areas. Environmental groups will continue to monitor humidity and lightning activity to refine regional hazard levels throughout the ongoing fire season.

Local leaders in affected northern municipalities welcomed the rescinding of emergency orders, emphasizing that reopened access supports local tourism and outdoor recreation businesses. The provincial government expressed appreciation for residents and visitors who adhered to restrictions during the peak danger period. As the measures to lift the fire zone and travel bans are fully implemented, authorities encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to follow provincial fire safety rules diligently.
