British Columbia wildfire evacuations exceed 20,000

SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA / RankWire.AI / – More than 20,000 people evacuated communities around Okanagan Lake after the Bald Range wildfire spread rapidly across southern British Columbia. The fire forced residents from Summerland, Peachland and nearby rural areas during the weekend. Flames burned more than 10,300 hectares and damaged or destroyed homes along the fire’s path. British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency as crews expanded evacuations and protected communities threatened by the advancing wildfire.

The fire started Friday evening and grew quickly as strong winds carried flames toward populated areas west of Okanagan Lake. Authorities ordered Summerland, a community of about 12,000 residents, to evacuate. Thousands of people also left Peachland and surrounding districts as evacuation zones widened. Orders covered Faulder, Penticton Indian Band lands and sections of the Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan regional districts. Officials placed additional properties under evacuation alerts and told residents to prepare for rapid departure.

BC Wildfire Service deployed ground crews, aircraft and helicopters as heavy smoke reduced visibility across the fire zone. Ten helicopters and one night-vision helicopter supported firefighting and evacuation operations. Crews built containment lines and protected structures near Summerland while monitoring changing conditions. Firefighters from Mexico, Australia and New Zealand also joined Canadian personnel already working across British Columbia. By Sunday, officials said the fire had shown limited additional growth, though hot and dry conditions continued across the region.

Evacuation operations widen around Okanagan Lake

The wildfire emergency also resulted in one reported death during an evacuation from Meadow Valley. An 80-year-old woman died suddenly while leaving her home with a family member as the fire threatened the area. Provincial authorities began reviewing the circumstances surrounding her death. Helicopter crews also rescued more than 50 people who became trapped or isolated as flames moved through affected communities. Emergency teams continued checking rural areas while residents followed evacuation orders across several parts of the South Okanagan.

Highway 97 closures disrupted travel between communities along Okanagan Lake and complicated movement through the affected region. Authorities warned residents not to use forest service roads during the emergency. Support centres opened in Penticton and West Kelowna to assist people who had left their homes. Local officials asked evacuees to register for emergency support and follow evacuation instructions. Damage assessments continued where conditions allowed crews to enter safely, while firefighters maintained protection around homes, roads and other infrastructure.

    Federal assistance supports displaced residents

Canada approved British Columbia’s request for federal assistance as thousands remained displaced by the wildfire. Public Safety Canada coordinated support for shelter and temporary accommodation through the federal Government Operations Centre. Provincial officials said immediate lodging remained available during the weekend for residents who needed a place to stay. Authorities encouraged people with access to family or friends to use those options. Emergency teams continued arranging accommodation for evacuees who required government support after leaving threatened communities.

The Bald Range wildfire remained the main emergency in the South Okanagan as crews monitored fire behavior and weather conditions. Investigators continued working to determine the cause of the blaze. More than 100 wildfires burned across British Columbia during the weekend, and many remained out of control. The province had already brought in international firefighting crews before the Bald Range fire expanded. Authorities continued telling residents under evacuation orders to leave immediately and urged people under alerts to remain ready to evacuate.
